Rocking Out with Desiree Holt

I look at the places my life has taken me and hope that I was smart enough to enjoy them all while I was there. I had great experiences working as a reporter for weekly newspapers, covering everything from local political meetings, to the trial of a man who shot his wife because she wrecked his car, I once did a tour of thirty stores in one day interviewing Santa Claus. It’s a good thing I didn’t wreck my car! I’ve done things both sane and insane, like promoting the opening of a shopping center by sending a band up in a hot air balloon and stopping traffic for four miles in every directions.
But I think the real richness of my life came from my years managing rock bands.
Rock musicians are a breed unto themselves. The music is their life, and one of their first goals is to be able to move their practice sessions from someone’s garage to a real practice studio. Sometimes they’re lucky and they get to practice far enough out of civilization that only the cows and horses can comment. Other times the poor manager gets to field phone calls from neighbors and—if you’re not lucky, the police—about that “awful sounding stuff”.  But wherever they practice, it’s all about the music.
The sound.
Their sound.
And the music is great. It’s good. It’s terrific. The success of a good song can give you the same high as really good sex. The success of your client can take you to orgasmic levels.  And despite all the pitfalls, there’s nothing like being at the top, even if the bottom is always just a misstep away.
Last year I went to Johnny Depp’s Viper Room to see a performance by an excellent rock band, Run Devil Run. The moment I stepped into the room it was like stepping into my past, surrounded by memories, excitement and hot music. The person who drew my attention, however, was the bass player. Can you say sex on a stick? He was sooo into his music, and so “hawt” on stage you could feel the energy and electricity sizzling from him.  I knew I had to write a story where the hero was based on him.
Check out this shot of him.

And so Joy Ride was born.
The traditional story of the good girl and the bad boy, set against the world of rock music. I hope you’ll come along for the ride with Emma and Marc.
Available at: Decadent Publishing, Amazon, Sony, All Romance eBooks.
Blurb:
Emma, the good girl poster child, is running from a life she suddenly sees as grey and suffocating. A life where she’s successfully buried all her hopes and secret dreams. Until the night she wanders into Aftershock and is immediately drawn to Marc, the hot bass player with the band. Marc doesn’t much care for the groupies who hang around the band. He wants a woman he can create a life with that’s a counterpoint to the craziness of the rock music business. When he sees Emma for the first time something inside him cracks wide open. Just one sizzling glance between them and he’s sure he’s found the woman he wants. But as the relationship grows, there’s a huge stumbling block: Emma won’t tell him her name.  The sex is fabulous but he wants more. So does Emma but her fear of everything falling apart builds a barrier she can’t seem to cross. Marc is taking her on the joy ride of her life, but will her own insecurities destroy everything?
Excerpt:
Clutching the cold beer bottle in her hand, she wedged her way between gyrating bodies, hypnotized by the music until she reached the front of the crowd…and stopped at the edge of the stage, mesmerized. The bass guitarist stood with one foot balanced on the monitor in front of him, his body leaning into the sound. His head was thrown back, dark hair flying around his face as he pounded out the rhythm of the song they were playing. He was wild, uninhibited, totally immersed in his music. He moved with an incredible grace to the accented beat, hips thrusting as his clever fingers plucked the strings and slid on the neck of the guitar.
For one incredible moment, Emma had the feeling he was playing only for her and she realized she really had been struck by “Lightnin’.” Permanently electrified by it.
A surge of heat raced through her, and it wasn’t the kind that emanated from the tightly packed sweaty bodies. Instead, an electric excitement gripped her, sending a charge of unfamiliar sexual thrill to every nerve. Her breasts tingled and between her thighs, she felt a throbbing as deep as the sound of the bass. At first she stood stiffly, clutching her drink. People jostled and shoved her as they kept time to the beat. She took two quick swallows of the beer, grimacing at the bitter taste. But as the alcohol eased her tension, she found herself catching the rhythm of the music and trying to mimic the movements of the bass player, totally caught up in the seductive lure of the song. For one crazy moment, she was gripped by an uncontrollable urge to jump up on the stage, and bump and grind with him. Her! Emma, the good girl!
Clumsily juggling the beer bottle, she slipped the thin strap of her purse over her head so it lay crosswise between her breasts. Her focus still on the bass player, she swayed to the beat, hips moving, rocking. When the song ended, the bass guitarist threw back his head on a final note and then looked out into the crowd, peering beyond the glare of the stage lights.
His eyes seemed to find hers as if pulled by a magnet, and a fist slammed through her.
Ohmigod!

Desiree's Bio:
Desiree Holt’s writing is flavored with the rich experiences of her life, including a long stretch in the music business representing every kind of artist from country singer to heavy metal rock bands. For several years she also ran her own public relations agency handling any client that interested her, many of whom might recognize themselves in the pages of her stories. She is twice a finalist for an EPIC E-Book Award, a nominee for a Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award, winner of the first 5 Heart Sweetheart of the Year Award at The Romance Studio as well as twice a CAPA Award for best BDSM book of the year, winner of two Holt Medallion Awards of Merit, and is published by five different houses. Romance Junkies said of her work: “Desiree Holt is the most amazing erotica author of our time and each story is more fulfilling then the last.”

Because I said so!

As I write this post I’m having an argument with my characters. Go ahead laugh. Most writers will understand and know I’m on the losing side. I don’t care, I’m asserting my creative control. Yep, losing big time.
Anywho. Does anyone watch Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels? This season has me in tears. I won’t spoil it for anyone who is still catching up on the season, but be warned. Tissue alert. While I was watching the show I realized how closely Gene and Shannon follow a romance novel. Gene’s fatal flaw, he’s selfish, arrogant, and insecure. DId I mention his fear of commitment? Does that sound like a romance hero? Shannon is the beautiful, independent heroine waiting tirelessly for the hero to commit. It’s hard enough to have relationship problems in private, but the whole world has to see what’s going on with them. And yes I’m breathlessly waiting for the next episode.
Yep. One of my guilty pleasures. My lit professors would be so proud at the way I’ve been analyzing characters and plot, finding point-of-view and motivation. I can’t even read a book without dissecting it in some way. All I know is I want to create that same emotion when I write. I want to keep the tension focused so the reader has to turn the page and keep turning the page to find out what happens.
So maybe I’ll stop arguing with my characters and let them have their way. Now that I’ve gotten to know my characters, I think the biggest issue is having plotted this thing through. Maybe this story would have been better if I pantsed it out. So here comes rewrite #5. Going back to the original story. Why can’t I begin with a love scene? Is there some rule that says I can’t?

A Moment With Kacey

Today I have fellow Whispers Author Kacey Hammell. Reading through your answers I see we have a couple of fave authors in common. You can't go wrong with a JD Robb or Lisa JAckson novel. Thank you so much for being here.

Tell the readers a little about yourself.
I’m married, a Mom to three active and creative kids who keep me on my toes.  I am an Avid Reader who found romance books at the age of thirteen.  Since then, I’ve been hooked. It was only natural in 2001 when I found an online romance review site and became a reviewer. In a few years, I reviewed over four hundred title and felt compelled to try writing myself. A few years later, at the advice and prodding of my husband, I decided to sit and write my first story.  I had to take a hiatus from writing four years ago when my father passed away unexpectedly, but now I’m in a better mind-set and have been able to find my way back to writing.

As an author, do you take time to read? If so, what do you like to read and who is/are your favorite author/s?
I love to read contemporary, paranormal and erotic romances and romantic suspense. My fave authors are Jaci Burton, JD Robb, Suzanne Brockmann, Monette Michaels, Sara Brookes, Lora Leigh, Cherry Adair, Nikki Soarde, Karen Robards, Marliss Melton, Cindy Gerard, Maya Banks, Lauren Dane, Lisa Jackson, Patricia A. Rasey, TL Schaefer, Jasmine Haynes … to name a few

If you could go anywhere in the world on a romantic getaway, what would you do and where would you go?
I’d love to go to Ireland with my hubby. One reason is my grandfather was from there and talked about it often when I was a child. I think seeing it with my husband would be great. Neither of us has ever been and any time away with the husband is romantic and much needed.

If you could live the life of one of your characters who would you be?
Isabella Knowles.  She’s a Detective, from one of my previously published works, and she’s tough-as-nails, stubborn and just a compelling character. She’s lost a lot in the past and tries to keep people at arms-length, but as with any good romance, there’s a hunky man who gets under her skin. Many who have read the book and know me personally, say that she & I are actually a lot alike
I will be re-releasing Isabella’s story – more info will be on my website when that happens.

The tag line on my blog is ‘Indulge Your Inner Romantic.’ What do you do to indulge?
A nice long soak in the bathtub, candles, hubby is there to wash my back, and we chat about this and that.  It’s the quiet times, curled up with my husband that I enjoy the most. Especially at the end of a long day.

LAST MAN STANDING ~ Over a decade has passed since Jaslyn "Jazz" Vanburren had her heart broken by her high school sweetheart. After turning thirty, Jazz finds herself remembering the past and tells herself to leave it where it rightfully belongs—behind her. In order to do that, she has to face the man who broke her heart. When he calls her out of the blue, asking to see her, Jazz knows her chance has come to show him what he's been missing.
But Jazz has another problem. Ryder Donovan—her best friend and her boss, the man who'd always been there for her, finally tells her like it is—he’s in love with her. Always has been and always will be.
Will Jazz hold tight to the past and the heartache she's lived with? Or will she embrace the future with the one man who has never let her down? Who will be the Last Man Standing beside her?

Jazz eyed Ryder, standing strong, tall and furious.
Sexy.
He never looked better.
Cut it out, Vanburren.
Dammit. Ever since she’d turned thirty two months ago, started reevaluating her life and trying to put the past where it rightfully belonged, she had started thinking of Ryder Donovan as more than just a boss and friend.
Though he’d always been powerfully masculine and sexy, she thought she’d gotten past all of that and saw him as only a pal, a buddy. But lately, just being in the same room with him anymore was painful to her sexually deprived body.
His smell, his voice, everything that he was rolled over her in waves whenever he was near and she was desperate to stifle it. He was one of her dearest and closest friends. They’d nearly lost one another once; she be damned if it would happen again.
And just when she thought her life couldn’t get any crazier or more confusing, Scott Price calls her out of the blue.
Was she suddenly on bad terms with the man upstairs? Or was it Karma that had turned her life upside down? Like a sense of déjà vu, it was like history repeating itself.
Her, Scott and Ryder.
But this time, she knew better.
She’d meet Scott for a drink; prove to herself once and for all that she was truly over him. Plus, maybe he’d see what had really been missing all these years. Who she’d become, how she’d grown into a woman.
Grow up, Jazz.
Sighing, she called herself every kind of fool. She didn’t know how she’d get through an evening with Scott. Deep inside she believed she was over him, but just hearing his voice caused her heart to pound and her palms to sweat.
Maybe seeing him again would get him out of her system once and for all. Then she’d prove to herself that she was better off without him.
But looking at her best friend, seeing how upset he was, perhaps meeting Scott wasn’t the best thing. She remembered her heartache after Scott had left town, and she knew Ryder did, too.
He’d been there for her, even after she’d broken things off with him. Was it fair to either of them to allow Scott back into her life—even if just for an evening?
But she knew she had to do this. She desperately wanted to have a man in her life, marry and have kids. In her heart, she knew she couldn’t do that with the ‘ghost’ of Scott Price and the past hanging over her head. She couldn’t move on, alone or with anyone else, until she closed this chapter of her life.
In an odd way, it was kismet.
Since Scott’s call, she had felt a rush of adrenaline that had nothing to do with emotions or the memories of his touch. Determined to move on, his call was just the chance she needed.
She only prayed that God wasn’t laughing at her, sending Scott back to her and making her fall in love with him all over again. But, if it was meant to be, then it was. However, she’d lost faith and trust in Scott years ago. She wasn’t about to place them, or her heart, in his hands again…skilled or otherwise.
Moving closer to Ryder, she took his hands in hers. Ignoring the spark of heat that flew up her arms, she could feel the rigid tension throughout his body. Even his fingers were stiff.
“Ryder.” Jazz grinned, hoping to bring back his gorgeous smile. She needed him in her corner more than ever. “It’s only drinks. I promise everything will be fine.”
His hands squeezed her, almost painfully so, as he stared down at her. She’d never seen him look so angry, so far away from her before, and it scared her. She didn’t want to lose him, no matter what.
“Jazz.” He stopped and looked over her shoulder, as if collecting his thoughts. “Jazz, I know you want to believe you’re over him. But this is me. I remember how much you loved the bast--guy, and what it was like after he was gone. I don’t want you to have to go through that again.”
Jazz let go of his hands and stepped back. “You don’t think I can resist him? I’m not the same schoolgirl I was then, admiring the jock with moon eyes. Give me a little credit.”
Turning her back on Ryder, she moved to her office window, looking out into Central Park. She loved New York in the fall. The leaves changing color and cooler days. Today, she didn’t feel the same sense of calm and appreciation she normally felt.
Knowing Ryder thought she was a fool cut her like a knife. She'd thought if anyone would understand, he would.
“Jazz, honey, I know you’ve changed. You’re stronger, smarter and more determined. You know what you want and go after it. But, baby, are you sure this is what you want to do? After all these years…to face that again?”
With Ryder’s hands on her shoulders, she felt herself begin to relax. Hearing the concern in his voice weakened her anger and the hurt. He was looking out for her, as always.
He’d never look at her as anything other than his pal, no matter how much she wished differently.
Jazz breathed deeply, trying to rid her mind of that thought. Friendship was more important than physical attraction.
“In some ways I have to face it, Ryder. In order to move on with my life fully, I have to say goodbye to the past.”
“What do you mean? Move on how?”
Jazz turned to face Ryder, her back against the window, his hands still on her shoulders. Being this close to him…
Don’t go there, Vanburren.
“I mean to move on as in get involved with someone else. Someone I could marry someday.”
If things were different, if they hadn’t been talking about her life, Jazz would have found Ryder’s expression funny. Slack jaw and eyes wide as if she’d grown two heads, Ryder looked perplexed.
She hadn’t told him about what she’d been feeling lately. Definitely not about her body’s reaction to him, wanting to find Mr. Right, or wanting to settle down. Though they were best friends, there were some things that perhaps even they couldn’t talk about.
“You mean you…” Ryder stopped, his arms falling to his sides. “You want to get married?”
Why those words coming from Ryder’s mouth made Jazz’s heart skip a dozen beats in a millisecond she wasn’t going to try to decipher at the moment. She had to leave it alone. She wouldn’t risk losing him.
“Yes. Someday I’d like to find Mr. Right and get married. I’m not getting any younger and I can’t keep shying away from guys after a couple dates.”
“This has something to do with your turning thirty, right? Your kid clock ticking and all that? Jesus, Jazz, that’s just women psyche stuff. You can’t decide to marry the first guy that comes along.”
Jazz frowned, watching Ryder pacing her office. His six-foot height and two-hundred-twenty pound muscular frame always seemed large to her five-foot-four, one-hundred-twenty-five pound size, but the space seemed smaller than ever as he paced.
Lost in her own thoughts, she watched his ass each time it crossed her line of vision. Encumbered in grey dress slacks, the fabric cupping the round globes like a glove, Jazz couldn’t help but appreciate the sight. Licking her lips, she wondered what they’d feel like. No doubt firm and soft. If only she could…
“Jazz? Jazz?”
“Hmm? What?” Jazz looked up at Ryder, shaking herself from her meanderings.
God, he’s gorgeous.
“What are you thinking about, Jazz? You have this dreamy look on your face.”
Feeling her face redden, Jazz stood taller, thankful for the cool pane of glass at her back as her body heated.
“Nothing, just daydreaming. And my kid clock, as you put it, is ticking. I admit it. I’ve thought a lot about the future lately and kids are a part of that.”
“You aren’t thinking…” Ryder stopped and turned his back on her.
“I’m not thinking what, Ryder? What were you going to ask?”
“Are you meeting Price in hopes of a future with him?”
Jazz barely heard the question with his back to her. At one time she would have given anything to have a future with Scott Price and believed those days were over. But she wanted to prove it to herself.
“Is it my intent to meet Scott and fall for him all over again? No.” Ryder turned back to her, his gaze penetrating, looking for the truth. She could do no less than give it to him one hundred percent. “But there’s still so much unresolved for me. I never thought I’d get past the broken heart I was left with. I did pull myself together and carried on, but part of me still wonders why.”
“Why what?” Ryder asked.
Jazz swallowed, her throat dry, a wave of embarrassment washing over her. It was hard for her to admit even to herself that her self-esteem had taken beating years ago. And it made her wonder if there was something about her that Scott hadn’t liked or wanted.
“I have to know why Scott never felt more than friendship, or occasionally more than that, years ago.” Jazz looked at Ryder, seeing his confusion, she tried to make it crystal clear. “I have to know why he didn’t want me. What was wrong with me that he didn’t want me?”
Ryder moved so fast, Jazz wasn't aware of it until she felt his hands holding her arms tightly. Looking up into his face, she was surprised to see so much anger in his eyes. “Ryder—”
“Shut up. Dammit.” Ryder closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Baby, you can’t really believe that it was you that he didn’t want. He was a selfish, arrogant bastard who never thought of anyone but himself. It wasn’t you.”
“Ryder, I know you—”
“No. I’m not done. You’re everything a man could want in his woman. Strong, fun, passionate, beautiful and caring. He was a fool.”
Her head was spinning. The look in Ryder’s eyes, his nearness, was a system overload. She believed every word he said. Said with such conviction and honesty, she felt herself slipping, wanting to fall into his arms and have him show her, in the way only their bodies could, that he believed everything he said.
“Jazz.” Cupping her face in his hands, Ryder rasped, “He never knew what he really had. Letting you go was probably the stupidest thing that idiot has ever done.”
“I almost believe you.” Smiling softly, Jazz ran her fingers down his left cheek. As the day was coming to an end, she felt stubble growing, its texture and roughness tickling her fingers. “You’re good for the ego, Ryder.”
Pushing his hands into her hair, cupping the back of her neck, Ryder leaned closer. Jazz could feel his breath on her lips. They were so close, if she stuck her tongue out she’d be licking his lips.
Not a bad idea, she thought, her breath hitching.
Staring into his eyes, a sea of deep blue, darkening with desire, Jazz felt as if the floor was shaking. No man had ever looked at her like that before. Even when she and Ryder had been lovers years ago, he’d never looked at her with such unadulterated lust and passion.
She could drown in it. She wanted nothing better than to let herself be taken by him. There would be no going back if she did. She wasn’t sure she could live with that.
But before she could back away, Ryder took the decision out of her hands, his voice pulling her from her thoughts.
“I have to taste you, Jazz. I need to feel your mouth under mine. It’s all I’ve dreamed about for longer than I can remember.”
His head dipped, taking her mouth with his, his tongue plundering her mouth before she had a chance to draw her next breath.
Shivers rushed through her body. Jazz’s eyes closed and she gave herself up to him. What she’d been dreaming about for weeks didn’t even come close to the reality of his body against hers and his mouth feeding on hers.
Even her memories didn’t come close to the overpowering and immense feelings coursing through her at this moment.
Her body felt alive. Wrapping her arms around Ryder’s neck, she gave back. Their tongues tangled and battled. Licking and nibbling one another’s mouth, angling their heads from side-to-side, the building could have caught fire and neither would have noticed.
Her hands ran down his back, her fingers digging in, bringing him closer. Pressed solidly against the window, Ryder’s body against her front, Jazz was burning alive. Images of tearing his clothes off, pushing him to the floor, licking and biting each and every inch of him flew through her mind.
Determined to do just that, Jazz was surprised to hear ringing. The only things that should have been ringing in her fantasy were their ears after they’d both found release. But they hadn’t gotten that far yet.
Wait...
What was that ringing?
“Jazz,” Ryder pulled back, but still dropped tiny kisses on her lips as if he couldn’t let her go. “The damned phone. We have to…damn, you taste so good….”
Ryder’s body left hers and Jazz looked into his eyes. Heat and desire burned, his body tight, he looked ready to pounce at any moment.

Smart, Sassy and all Avery

Today I have the fabulous Avery Flynn at Decadent Decisions. Miss Avery is a fellow Kiss of Death Member, and fast becoming one of my favorite people. Her latest release combines two of my favorite things, food and a man in uniform. So take it away Avery!

Tell the readers a little about yourself.
Add one part femme fatal to one part astrophysicist, then toss in a generous helping of snark and you’ll get Avery Flynn. She’s the coolest girl I know and she lives only in my head.
As you may have guessed, Avery is my alter ego. I find that writing under a pseudonym really opens up the creative process. The real me lives outside of Washington D.C. with my dashing husband, three crazy kids and two arthritic dogs. I dream of one day having the floor-to-ceiling library seen in Disney's Beauty and the Beast and have vowed to perfect the coffee IV drip. But enough about me. How about some Avery?
Favorite Color: Hot Pink
Favorite Drink: Single malt scotch on the rocks
Favorite Dance: Argentinian Tango
Favorite Vacation Spot: Iceland’s Ice Hotel
Favorite Position: With The Right Partner? All Of Them
As an author, do you take time to read? If so, what do you like to read and who is/are your favorite author/s?
I can’t imagine a life without reading. That would be hell. I read all the time. Right now I’m reading an erotic romantic suspense called Make Me Sweat from fellow Evernight Publishing author Avril Ashton. It’s awesome and is pretty typical for me as far as reading type - I love reading about strong women going head to head against an alpha male. Num. Num. That comes in many varieties from romance to biography. Cleopatra by Stacy Shiff was an amazing read.
If you could go anywhere in the world on a romantic getaway, what would you do and where would you go?
I totally know the answer to this - Tahiti. I’d stay in one of the luxury huts (what, you thought I’d forgo a bathroom on a romantic getaway?) that stands above the crystal blue water. It would have a window in the floor to watch the fish and a giant fluffy bed to … enjoy when the hubby and I aren’t watching the fish.
If you could live the life of one of your characters who would you be?
Great question! I don’t want to live Claire’s life from Up a Dry Creek (psycho killers are so not my thing), but I’d trade a day or two to live the life of a restaurant owner. I really like Claire a lot. She’s funny, feisty and would be a blast to sit down with and enjoy a beer (or four).
The tag line on my blog is ‘Indulge Your Inner Romantic.’ What do you do to indulge?
Hot yoga. It’s ninety minutes in 105 degrees and I love it! I know it doesn’t sound like an indulgence, but let me explain. For an hour and a half, no one can ask me for anything; the phone doesn’t ring; and I’m not doing laundry or the dishes. All I can do is breath and work my ass off. Also, hot yoga has taught me a lot about what my body can do, how it can bend and how there’s not a damn thing I can’t do - well, at least for thirty seconds.
Thanks again for having me!

Up a Dry Creek Blurb and Excerpt
Claire Layton is a successful, though somewhat debt-ridden, restaurateur who minds her own business—literally. She has enough on her plate between an irascible chef, an abandoned sous-chef, and the pressure of running her highly praised eatery, Harvest. But when she discovers one of her customers dead in her dumpster, her world begins to unravel.
Even as her county sheriff brother Hank and his team continue to swarm the property looking for evidence, she receives a threatening call. It seems there’s a slight problem involving the dead young woman in the dumpster. She doesn’t have her phone and her flash drive with her. The killer makes it clear that Claire better find them by noon the next day or he’ll go after her and her entire family.
With the clock ticking, Claire searches for the missing items to no avail. Complicating matters is the arrival of Jake Warrick, a hotshot security expert hired by the dead woman’s father to find her killer. Claire’s trying her best to get Jake out of her restaurant when her jeep goes up in flames.  The noon deadline has passed.
Determined to find the killer and to keep her family safe, Claire refuses to back down, even as the murderer continues to terrorize her.  Jake isn’t backing down either, and the tension between the two—sexual and otherwise—continues to mount.  Jake has no intention of leaving Claire in danger—or before he gets to know her much, much better.
Clues, most leading nowhere, pile up, and the threads of the mystery are becoming still more complicated, even as the killer comes closer and closer to claiming his prize—and his prey.

Desperate to put something in her mouth before she said something stupid, Claire reached for another slice of pizza but hesitated. Her hand hovered over the only piece left.
“We can arm wrestle for the last slice.” Jake’s voice warmed her skin as if he’d touched her.
Claire took in his thick biceps. Without thinking, she reached out toward him, but squashed the impulse. Memories of Brett had her on guard again. Jake was the definition of eye candy; pretty to look at, bad for her heart. Her hand switched course. She grabbed her beer and took a swig.
A mouthful of the dark liquid went down the wrong pipe. Coughing, she gasped for breath. Jake patted her back until she regained her normal breathing ability.
But his hand didn’t move. It stayed between her shoulder blades, fingers spread wide. Sparks shot outward from his palm through her body.
Her breath slowed. Awareness prickled her skin. She yearned for his touch. Everywhere. Her lips parted. Slowly, she turned around. His hand left a trail of fire as it slid down and around her body until it landed on the curve of her hip.
He brought up his other hand to brush a stray hair from her face. His slate blue eyes drew her in to his sexual orbit.
“You have some sauce right here.” His voice’s deep timbre sent an unmistakable signal to which her body responded. Her breasts became full and heavy. Her clit demanded attention.
He wiped the spot by the corner of her mouth with his thumb, then tracked the red liquid across her bottom lip. His head dipped lower. Hers moved up. When their lips met, thoughts of Brett and the Voice of Doom disappeared.
His firm tongue stroked her lips and begged to be let in. She opened and his tongue swept in. She wrapped her tongue around his, dared him to taste his fill. The hand on her hip tightened, and pulled her closer to his hard body. In return, her fingers found their way to the bottom of his T-shirt and started an upward exploration. His coarse chest hair tickled her palm, so alien and enticing at the same time.
His lips left hers and traced down her neck. He arrived at that sweet spot where her throat met her shoulder. Her spine dissolved as he sucked and nibbled.
“You taste so good.” His breath hot against her skin.
The feel of his hands cupping her ass made it impossible to respond verbally other than to moan her appreciation. Her body slid up against his as he lifted her to sit on the kitchen counter. He yanked her closer. The hard bulge in his jeans rubbed against her in the perfect spot.
Every part of her, relaxed only a few minutes before, hummed with tension. Her nipples stiffened into tight nubs. She squeezed her legs around Jake’s waist, her wet core snug against him. She clutched at his shirt, desperate to touch his skin. She needed him closer. Her body demanded it. The endorphins wrapped around her brain gave the go ahead.
She hiked up his shirt and ran her hands up his strong back, felt the tension within him. He tugged her scoop necked T-shirt lower and his lips descended to the top of her cleavage. He licked and kissed above her teal bra.
Claire’s butt started to vibrate.
Not Jake making my ass vibrate.
It was her phone stuffed into her back pocket. She had to stop to answer. Her body screamed no.
“Phone,” Claire panted. She pushed against Jake’s shoulders. “Have… to… answer… my… phone.”
He groaned into her breasts, put his hands on the counter on either side of her hips and lifted his head. The dark look in his eyes showed he hated this interruption as much as she did.
She got lost for a moment in those slate blue eyes. She wanted him. Now. Here on the counter next to the almost empty pizza box. The vibration stopped, but began again a second later. Jake swung her down so she stood again on the kitchen’s taupe tile.
“You’d better answer that.” He backed away, his desire palpable.
Claire reached into her back pocket, warm from Jake’s touch, and pulled out the scarlet phone.
“Hello?” Her voice sounded breathy to her own ears.
“You know, I don’t like to work this hard for the things I want. Do you understand what I’m telling you?”
Panic exploded in her stomach at the first syllable from the Voice of Doom. Claire looked up at Jake, who cocked his head in question.
“I understand. You want the phone and flash drive, but I don’t have them. I looked everywhere.”
Jake stepped closer. He leaned his head toward the phone. She angled it outward so he could listen.
“Your lack of results have, well… Sweetheart, I’m not the kind of guy you want angry.” His voice pitched lower. “Lucky for me, I’m not angry. I. Am. Furious.”
Claire’s temper snapped. Again. This nutcase killed Kendall. He threatened her and her family. He trashed her house. And he had the gall to go all drama king on her for something she didn’t have and couldn’t find? She’d had enough.
“Welcome to the club asshole, because I’m not too happy myself after the job you did on my house.”
“Just wait, Kitten, you haven’t seen anything yet.” He hung up on her. Again.
