Revved and Ready for passion, heat sizzles between two friends…

For Hayley Fitzgibbon, the heat wave blanketing her small town is nothing compared to the inferno inside her whenever she looks at her best friend, Rory. On the night of his parents’ anniversary party, she no longer resists her burning desire and makes it known how much she wants him. Secluded under a willow tree, down a lover’s lane, she’s revved and ready to claim her man on the top of his ’69 Mustang.

Excerpt © Kacey Hammell, 2013:
“Take this path,” she directed, hearing the breathlessness and passion in her voice.
“Hales, this is—”
“Memory Lane at the back of Zwick’s Park, I know. I haven’t been here in a long time.”
He maneuvered the car through the long grass and around high bushes. The area had overgrown in the twenty-something years since she’d been there last.
“Neither have I. Last girl I brought here was—”
“You don’t have to tell me. Tonight’s for new memories and new beginnings.” Last thing she cared about was his old lovers. “There are some willow trees right up there. Park beneath them for privacy.”
“Hales,” he began, his voice unsteady.
“What’s the matter? Scared to be alone out here with lil ole me?” She laid her arm over his arm, silencing him, amazed once again by the wealth of muscle beneath his shirt. Gone was the tall flagpole type body he grew up with. The six pack abs and bulging biceps he sported now continuously held her in awe – and drooling. He definitely took care of himself.
Rory pulled in under the trees, glanced over at her, his eyes enflamed in heat and desire, then turned off the ignition.
Hayley undid her seatbelt, shifted toward him, and clasped the back of his neck, then pulled him close. She crushed her mouth to his.
He tasted so good. Intoxicating. Incredible. Fucking superb. She tangled her tongue with his. Shivers of delight spread along her body, nipples beading while juices gathered in her pussy.
Digging her fingers into his nape, anxiousness filled her to taste every inch of him but there wasn’t room to maneuver in the tight confines of the car.
“It’s too hot in here to sit. Let’s go outside,” she whispered. She pulled back and opened her door. Though the strangling humidity hadn’t dissipated much, a slight breeze skated along her skin. She welcomed the pleasure of the coolness against her body from the numerous days of nothing but stagnant humidity and the fire Rory stoked inside her.
Slamming the door, she tip-toed farther under the trees, careful not to sink into the grass in her stilettos, and waved him to follow her. “Come on,” she called.
Rory wiped a hand over his face.
“Trust me it’s much cooler out here.”
For the moment at least.

After the deaths of her husband and child, tragedies that she blames herself for, Andrea “Andy” Sheaver has shut herself off from the world. The only place she finds any relief from her shattered heart is Club Splendor, where she and her husband often frequented together.  There, Andy submits to pleasure and pain in situations so her grief is forgotten for a little while.
But Hunter Sullivan won’t stand idly by and watch Andy self-destruct. A friend of her husband, and the owner of Club Splendor, Hunter has kept his love for Andy hidden for years. He refuses to think of her at the club, cold and detached as she’s become, looking for an easy fix to take away the pain in her heart.  Hunter wants her to vibrant in life again and sets out to prove he is exactly who she needs.

Excerpt © Kacey Hammell, 2013
Hunter sighed, which caught Andy’s attention. Her eyes met his briefly before lowering to her hands, which were clenched tight in her lap.
“Look, Andy,” he began.
“What do you want, Hunter?” Her forest-green-eyed gaze met his. Anger swirled in their depths.
“I’m tired of this. Dammit.” He snarled, rising, and crossed to the fireplace. He ran his fingers through his hair and leaned one arm on the mantel. He looked over at her, stomach churning with indigestion and pain. He’d loved Patrick and Peter too. Could she not understand that she wasn’t the only one suffering?
“Tired of what? I never asked you here.”
“This!” Hunter spread his arms wide. “You. I’m so tired of seeing you locked away in this house, never leaving and pictures gone.”
“Go to hell,” Andy spat and leapt to her feet. She moved behind the loveseat, obvious fury making her hands shake as she laid them on the back of it. “You don’t have any say in how I live. I never asked for your opinion. If you don’t like it, get the hell out of my house. And my life!”
Hunter breathed deep, nostrils flaring. He could no more walk away from her than he could from the Sheavers. She was as much a part of his life, and his heart, as they were.
But his love for her went far beyond sisterly.
He pushed that thought away, buried it deep within himself as he’d done for years. She was Patrick’s girl, his wife. He always honored that.
“Dammit, I don’t want to argue with you, Andy. But you really need to move on. Live life again and leave this house.”
“I leave the house. You don’t know what I do every day.”
“Oh yes, you go out. Like the other night? Why did you go to the club? I thought we agreed you were no longer a member,” Hunter demanded, curious about her answer.
“No. You decided I was no longer a member. Not me. I never said I wanted that. Who are you to make decisions for me?” Andy retorted, cheeks flushed, hands on her hips.
Hunter had to admit he was finally seeing a glimpse of the fiery, strong woman she’d been until this last year. He liked her eyes ablaze, jaw clenched and fury radiating off her body. He just needed to provoke her enough and challenge her to move beyond these walls and back to the things she loved to do.
“I don’t want to make decisions for you.” He took a calming breath. “Listen, the club is not the place for you any longer. Without Patrick… There’s no need for you to be there anymore.”
“Why do you think that?”
“He was the one who wanted to show it to you. He never really thought you’d come to enjoy it as much as you did. Neither of you interacted with others. What can you find there now without him?”
Andy smiled, cold and detached. He hated that smirk.
“Oh, come now. You know what happens in your club. Surely, I don’t have to spell it out for you.”
Goddamn her.
Yes, he knew what she’d done inside the room she’d once used with Patrick. Though he normally didn’t interfere in his members’ activities unless there was a problem, he did ask Paige and Nolan if Andy had simply watched. He’d been shocked, then livid, to learn a few details of what happened between the three of them.
Andy had always been a devoted wife to Patrick, faithful to the core. To know she’d been an active participant at the club for the first time had suddenly left him empty and alone.
But he couldn’t allow his feelings on the matter to distract him from pushing her back into life.
He shrugged. “No. You don’t have to spell it out for me. But is that what you truly want and need in your life?  Sex with strangers? Do you need to find comfort in people who don’t care about you?”
Andy glared at him. “That is none of your business.” Her voice rose as she continued. “What I do in my life is for me to decide. I never asked to have you in my life. Don’t expect me to want you there now.”
His heart clenched. Her words were like a punch to the gut.
Yes, he’d sort of come as a package deal when she’d married Patrick. But the Sheavers were the only family he had. And when Peter was born, oh, he’d played the dutiful uncle to the little boy. Though she’d never voiced her frustration at his being in attendance at nearly all family gatherings or taking up some of Patrick’s time once a week for a guys’ night out, he’d understood the stone-faced woman who left the words unsaid.
“I always promised Patrick I’d look after you if he couldn’t.”
“Fuck off, Hunter. Don’t give me that.” Her hands fisted at her sides. “Look, please just go. I don’t need you here. I have things to do.”
He wouldn’t be so easily dismissed.
“Things to do? Like what, plan your next adventure at the club? I don’t think so. Why? Explain to me why you felt the need to go there?”
Arms wide, she yelled, “I wanted to fuck somebody. Is that what you want to hear? That I wanted to have a cock inside me for the first time in almost two years? I wanted to have a man inside, pounding me—brutal and painful. What better place to do that than at the club where I know I’m safe?”
Hunter’s heartbeat accelerated. To know she needed someone that close to her was agonizing. It was a barren and desperate act of someone who had nothing to live for. Or didn’t think she was worth much.
“Why pain? You couldn’t have found satisfaction in that. No pleasure, Andy? You, of all people, found pleasure in that kind of sex? I don’t believe for a moment that you’re now into rough sex,” Hunter said, gruff. His mouth was dry, and confusion made his head hurt. Would he never understand this woman?
Andy crossed her arms over her chest. She looked out the window behind him. Her gaze was unfocused, filled with pain.
“Yes, pain. It’s what I deserve, isn’t it?” Her gaze captured his. Hunter felt his heart crack at her desolate look.

Taking a Chance on Love

First of all, thanks to W. Lynn Chantale for sharing her blog with me today!
Many of us have had our hearts broken, either by a long-ago love or a more recent one. But what do you do once that happens? Some women might decide to make their ex's life miserable. For example, leaving nasty messages on their old love's answering machine or driving by his house to see if another woman's car is parked there. But that kind of behavior can leave a woman in trouble with the law and is definitely not recommended. It's not a great idea to set oneself up to be the subject of the next episode of Snapped.
Some women turn their anger and sadness inward and may end up over-indulging in Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies, Little Debbie snack cakes and pints of Ben & Jerry's (New York Super Fudge Chunk is my favorite). Even worse, some ladies turn to alcohol "to drown their sorrows." Again, bad idea. These women are only hurting themselves in the long run.
They say the best thing to do, once you've fallen off the horse, is climb right back on again.  In other words, the best way to get over an old love is to find a new one.  The heroine of my erotic romance Uncollared is trying to get back on that horse herself.
Not that she's looking for love. No, that's the last thing on her mind. She's hurt and angry after her Dominant, Philip, ends their relationship. She knows she'll never love any man the way she does Philip, but also realizes that she can't mourn him forever. When another Dom, Chess, makes her an offer, she decides to continue exploring her submissive nature while keeping her heart safe.
Here's a bit more about the book:

Submissive Mia Manetti is devastated when her first Master uncollars her just as she was hoping for a permanent relationship with him. Trying to move on, she agrees to sub for a powerful and sexy new Dom.
Chess Ryan has wanted Mia from the first moment he saw her at Club Restraint, but it was always "hands off" because she belonged to his friend Philip. Now, thanks to that friend's maneuvers, Mia is finally his. But only for a little while.
Mia finds it increasingly difficult to keep her feelings in check as she experiences erotic delights with Master Chess, sensual and sexual fantasies that she's never known before. Is she setting herself up for another heart ache?
Guilt, secrets and misplaced pride all keep Chess and Mia from being completely honest with each other. As they connect sexually and emotionally, they realize their relationship has grown too serious to be called "play". How far are they willing to go as Master and slave?

Mia has no intention of letting her heart get broken again. But she finds it very hard to resist her new Dom's charms. Can she keep her emotions separate during all the sexy adventures they share?
Erotic excerpt:
He sat up and pulled the shirt over his head with her assistance. “Now you,” he said, unbuttoning her blouse and divesting her of the bra. Leaving her nude.
She wriggled a bit farther down his body, straddled his thighs, and unzipped his jeans. No need to ask the ultimate question—boxers or briefs?—because there was nothing at all between the denim and his hot, eager cock. Already hard, it grew even harder and larger as she trailed her fingers down the shaft. Mia swirled her finger around the head, smoothing a bead of precum into his silky flesh.
She wanted to get both hands in there, massage his balls while she held his cock, but there wasn’t enough room. She raised herself to her knees and tugged at his jeans. Chess lifted his ass to let her pull them lower on his thighs. With a sigh, Mia sank down on his legs, inhaling the musky scent of his arousal.
She took her time fisting his cock, enjoying the way his smooth skin moved fluidly over his steely hardness. With her other hand she caressed his sac, gently rolling his balls until they grew tight and drew up close to his body.
Chess grasped her hand. “Enough. I don’t want to go off too soon.”
The thread of need in his raspy voice pleased Mia, and her lips curved in a little smile of satisfaction. He was enjoying this. Though she was the submissive, tormenting him like this made her the powerful one.
She leaned forward and kissed the middle of his hairy chest. She kissed his left nipple. Then she nipped it.
“Umph!” He lightly smacked her ass, then rubbed it. “Bad girl.”
Mia smiled. She enjoyed being bad.
Let’s see if I can be worse still.
She draped her arm over the edge of the sofa and lifted the carton of vanilla ice cream, now melted. Little by little she drizzled the creamy liquid onto him in her best impression of Jackson Pollock. Chess’s torso became her canvas, the spoon her paintbrush. The “paint” adorned his chest in aimless swirls and squiggles.
Mia rested on her haunches to admire her artwork. Chess gazed at her, his eyes glittering, heavy-lidded. His lips were full and rosy, as though he’d been kissed. Lust shot through Mia like an arrow heading straight to her pussy. She wanted to kiss those lips, lick them, bite them.
But he hadn’t invited her to. So she would simply content herself with the rest of him.
What Mia doesn't realize is that Chess has a secret, one that could destroy their relationship just as it's starting up. As her feelings for him deepen, Mia has to decide how much she wants him, and if she cares deeply enough to risk her heart to keep him.
That's what we all must ultimately decide—are we going to let a past hurt keep us from loving again? Most of us, fortunately, decide to move forward and give love another chance.  And most of us are glad we did.
Thanks so much for hosting me today!

A Ghost For Christmas be Kacey Hammell

After receiving a long weekend at an elegant hotel beside the majestic Niagara Falls as a Christmas gift, Jodie Gibson is determined to do nothing but relax and enjoy the scenery. And, okay, just maybe meet someone who makes her toes curl.

Sebastian is sophisticated, tall, dark and gorgeous--everything a woman fantasizes about. But he's also an 18th century ghost. He haunts the halls of the hotel, seeking the one true love that can help him find peace…

Excerpt © Kacey Hammell

As she peered into the reflective glass, a face appeared behind her. Jodie whipped around and fell back against the window.
Oh my fucking God!
Before her, in what looked like a shimmering bubble, stood the most breathtakingly beautiful man she’d ever seen. Dressed in a white shirt and black pants, he had dark unruly hair and striking, magnetic blue eyes that held her in place.
Jodie blinked, uncertain, scared and breathless.
How was it possible? She’d read the newspaper clippings, yes, but it was unimaginable to think ghosts might actually walk among the living.
Not everything made sense. She only believed in things that could actually be seen, felt and touched. This seemed surreal.
Stunned by the apparition before her, dressed in what looked like centuries-old clothes straight out of Esquire, he seemed to look straight through her, and his smile warmed her clear to her toes. Lord, she was in trouble.
“Hello.” Soft and gravelly, his voice alone seduced her…all the way to her toes. Her body quivered and her center tightened.
Whoa. What the hell am I thinking?  There’s a ghost in front of me and I’m ready to jump his bones. Not bloody likely.
“What are you doing here? Get out.  I don’t care who you are, you’re leaving, right now.”
He frowned. “No need to be frightened.  I’ve been here for centuries.”
Jodie laughed, and not one to wilt like a scared little girl, stood tall. “This is all a joke.” She looked around, up and down, and all over the room. “Are there hidden cameras somewhere?  Hey, Ashton, if you’re behind the camera, you can come out now.  I’ve been Punk’d good. Thanks and all, but I’d like to get on with my evening without you.”
“Who is this Ashton? What is a punk?  A rake, perhaps?” he asked.
Jodie squinted.  “A rake?”  She hadn’t ever heard that term spoken, but had read it in historical romances. No one talked like that these days. “No. Never mind, it’s not important. Listen, I just want you to go. I want to enjoy my evening.”
His smile was gentle. “I’m sorry, my dear, but this evening every decade is the only time I am visible to the human eye. I never miss a chance to watch the Falls.”
Every decade…
“You’re telling me you do this every ten years? How old are you?”
“I was born in 1781. That makes me—”
“Two hundred thirty-one,” Jodie whispered, legs weak. She grabbed the back of the chair nearby and sat down. Were such things even possible?
Jesus.
An eighteenth century ghost stood before her.
Merry Christmas to me.

Her Perfect Man by Nona Raines

Kim Hansen has terrible luck with men. When her sexy downstairs neighbor shows a more-than-neighborly interest in her, she's suspicious. She's been burned too many times, by too many guys. Steamy sex is one thing, but Charlie Keller is smart, hot and successful—so what more could he want with her?
Though Kim does her best to shut him down, Charlie's not put off by her attitude. He doesn't scare easy. Kim thinks she's clever, using sex to maintain an emotional distance and to keep him off guard. But Charlie sees through her tough exterior to the tender heart beneath.
But Kim needs to be won over. Sure, their bedroom action is awesome, but given her past mistakes, she's convinced Charlie is too good to be true. Just too perfect. But if Charlie has his way, he'll prove that he's the perfect man for her.
Genre: Contemporary erotic romance m/f

Nona Raines became hooked on romances when she first picked up "The Flame and the Flower" by Kathleen Woodiwiss (and she's not telling how long ago that was). Romances may have changed since then, but her love for a good love story has not. She's been writing off and on for years, but it was only when she joined the Central New York Romance Writers Association that she finally gained the support and confidence she needed to complete a manuscript.
Nona lives in upstate New York with her many pets and is currently working on her next novel. A former librarian, she enjoys reading books of all genres and discussing them with others. She is thrilled to finally be able to call herself an author and looks forward to hearing from readers.
Excerpt:
Kim pulled open the door and began "Look, I just want to…" Her voice trailed off and her mouth went dry as she got a good look at him. This was Charlie?
Gone was the preppy polo shirt he'd had on last night. Today he wore a black T-shirt that stretched tightly over his chest. A warm, hard chest that she remembered touching last night. Kim's heart thumped.
He'd changed last night's Dockers for a pair of jeans that hugged his thighs. Heat flashed through her as she recalled sitting on his lap and how hard he'd been for her. Oh, God, she couldn't help it. Her gaze went to his package, which filled the front of his jeans beautifully.
Her eyes flashed to his. "You like?" he asked. The same words she said to him last night.
She opened her mouth, but no words came out. He was the same man, but different. And not only had the clothing changed, so had his demeanor. This Charlie was not the geeky schoolteacher or the helpful downstairs neighbor. This Charlie was a really hot guy. And from the way his blue eyes lasered her, he thought she was hot, too.
"Are you sober now?" His voice was taut.
"Huh?" She blinked. "Yeah."
"Good." Before Kim had time to wonder at his question or feel insulted by it, he stepped inside, kicked the door shut and hauled her into his arms.
He didn't so much kiss her as devour her—as though he were taking up from where they left off last night, before his conscience made him leave. Kim had no trouble catching up.

Bad Boy Blake

Blake Bennett is the town bad boy turned Sheriff, elected to keep the peace. When Blake first meets Gina, she's butting heads with the Mayor…over the type of dancing she teaches—pole dancing.

Gina West is a professional dancer, who retired from the stage, and moves to Westonville, NB, to start her own dance studio. But Gina is not who she claims to be, and when strange things start happening…vengeful threats and vandalism…Blake begins digging for the truth. In his role as protector, he begins to fall for Gina, but will her lies and subterfuge destroy any chance for them to be together?

She stood to follow him to the door, but found herself hauled up against his muscular chest as he treated her to another scorching kiss.
“Woman, you’re driving me crazy.”
Pushing away from him she asked, “Me? What did I do?”
“Now that I know what’s hidden under that robe, my hands are itching to peel it off you again.”
“What’s stopping you?” she said as she swiftly untied the sash, shrugged the robe off her shoulders and let it drop to the floor.
Just as fast was his reaction as he picked her straight up in the air and set her down on the counter. He chuckled in response to her shriek as the smooth, icy marble met her bare backside and she arched backward, supporting her weight on her hands. Quick to take advantage, he swooped in to devour her breasts with his hands and mouth.
Her legs wrapped around him of their own volition, urging him closer, closer…and then his cell phone rang.
He ceased ministering to her body and allowed his head to rest in the valley of her newly sensitized orbs. She ran her fingers through his hair, a touch on the long side for a man in his profession, her actions serving to hold him against her.
“I have to go,” he mumbled against her skin.
“I know.”
“We’ll finish this later,” he said, promise inherent in his words.
“Okay.”
He lifted his head and covered her mouth with his, their tongues mating, creating their own magic as they thrust and parried, suckled and withdrew. His hands cupped her buttocks as he lifted her and set her on her feet.
“This is the first time in my years as Sheriff that I allowed anything or anybody to come between me and my job. What kind of spell have you cast over me?” he teased.
“Not a strong enough one, apparently.” Then seeing his confusion, she added, “You’re only human, Blake. The job isn’t the sum total of who you are as a man.”
“Maybe not, but I’ve measured myself by it for a long time.”
“Then maybe you were due for a change.” She smoothed his hair back into place with her hands.
“You could be right. We’ll discuss this later. Right now, I have to see how Rob is and if forensics found anything downstairs, then I’ll have them come up here.” His eyes traveled the length of her body as he spoke. “Better get some clothes on or I won’t be the only one who knows your secret.”
“What secret?”
“That you are indeed a true redhead.”

The Hardest Book I’ve Ever Written

So, this title is a bit misleading in that it assumes I’ve “written” the actual book. Let me clarify, this should be “writing” as the particular story has become something of a challenge for me! BUT, I love the story, and I can’t wait to share it with my readers. I love it so much, in fact, that I wouldn’t dream of scrapping it. However, while the story itself is great, my writing of the story was lacking some. Yes, I’ll admit it.

I’m not going to be giving away even the remotest inkling of what this story is about – well perhaps one hint – it has vampires in it! Beyond that, my lips are sealed! But what I will talk about is what exactly it is that I’m failing so miserably at! Drum roll please…

AGING! This particular story starts with a very dark scene from my heroine’s childhood. It then moves on to her teen years, then skips forward a couple year, and then finally to current time a couple years after that. It’s not epic, but it does show certain scenes throughout my girl’s life that are poignant in some way and, frankly, need to be written for the story to work.

I’ve personally never written from the perspective of a child, and I tend to write with a fairly mature, even eloquent, style while still being blunt and avoiding flowery euphemisms. I’m not tooting my own horn … that’s just my “sound” if one were to analyze it. This “sound” does not bode well with the flow of a child’s thoughts and processes, and it has been a challenge for me to break from this style. I’m now retooling a number of the scenes, and I will tell you it is difficult, because though I’m tackling this problem, I don’t like the new “sound” of my writing. It’s appropriate, and I believe well written for the age of the character, but it doesn’t have my normal flow, and that’s been extremely difficult to diverge from.

All that said, this has been my most challenging manuscript to write because it has pushed me outside of my comfort zone. But I’m going to say it again, I LOVE THIS STORY… And I promise, I will share it with you soon.

When Ashton is left orphaned after her parents are murdered, her life becomes a hell she could never have imagined. Left to fend for herself, and responsible for a debt she doesn’t owe, she is swept into a life as a gentleman’s escort at a private men’s gaming hall. Her new manager makes it abundantly clear he doesn’t appreciate her inexperience, innocence, and shyness. On the contrary, he despises everything about her.
Derek can be “difficult,” she’s been told. And however dark and handsome he may be, he terrifies her in a way that chills her to the bone, but leaves her begging to understand him. As they are pulled along together, more secrets and threats than either one could ever conceive are revealed, and a common enemy emerges. This enemy will stop at nothing to bring Derek to his knees while using Ashton as the greatest pawn in his torturous game.
Will Derek be able to let down his shield of cold, harsh emotion before it’s too late? Will he be able to sacrifice himself to save Ashton, or will they both be destroyed by the secrets of their pasts?

Excerpt:
Once in the fitting room, Derek takes the chair again while I start to remove my clothes. I intentionally wore ugly, stretched-out, white cotton underwear that is entirely too big on me in the event he should be here. My mouth isn’t the only thing that can get me into trouble—my sarcasm knows no bounds when I’m unhappy.
As he sees the appalling excuse for an undergarment, his eyes move up to mine, narrowing darkly at my obvious defiance. I look coolly back at him before looking away dismissively. My anger and resentment of him from the humiliation he subjected me to the previous morning, not to mention his treatment of me over the past two weeks, have charged me into a bold, fiery bitch that no longer cares what retribution I might face. While my tongue usually gets me in trouble, today I decided to let my underwear do the talking.
Jacob enters with an armful of dresses for me to try on, and he cringes as he takes in my defiant granny panties, hated the world over by men, including, apparently, gay men.
He turns to Derek, and with a scrunched-up face, he worries out loud. “The dresses aren’t going to lay right over those…” He tosses a nod in my general direction.
Derek wastes no time at all reassuring Jacob and striking back at me. “No worries. Ashton was just taking them off. She won’t be wearing underwear anymore.”
I glare defiantly back at him as I drop the loose fabric to the floor. He returns the glare for a moment before letting his gaze travel down my body to my sex, and as it lands there, smoldering with heat, I turn abruptly from him, intentionally showing him my backside instead. I look to the mirror in front of me, and I catch his eyes flit away from me in annoyance. He worries his lip with his thumb and index finger as he contemplates, and the slightest of smirks crosses over his mouth. Jacob is standing by looking from one to the other of us, obviously wondering just exactly what he’s gotten himself in the middle of.
Derek finally looks back to Jacob. “Get on with it.”
I try on one after the other of the dresses. Some are perfect; Jacob pins in additional alterations in others. Derek sits by bored, only glancing up from his cell phone occasionally. One such occasion is when Jacob remarks that I’m “just not curvy enough for this one.”
Derek looks up to Jacob, but he shifts his eyes to mine before commenting, “Yes, well, if you can figure out some way of making her look female, you let me know.”
Jacob again lets his eyes pass between us, seeming to wonder all the while what he’s missing. As I hold Derek’s eyes with my own, my anger falters, and the pain that is behind my fury pushes through. I try to wrangle my tears into submission, but it’s no use. In defeat, first one, and then another spills from my eyes and slides down my cheeks. Jacob regards my state and excuses himself from the room.
I stand on the hemming block in the center of the room, refusing to look at Derek. But he’s looking at me, and as my hurt continues to work through my entire body, I let my tongue do what it does best. “Why do you hate me so much?”
He says nothing, but stands and moves to me. Reaching around behind me, he pulls the zipper of the dress down, and then, returning his hands to my shoulders, he pulls the straps down, exposing first my small breasts, and then the rest of my naked body as it falls to the floor.
He leans in to my ear and speaks. “You don’t know anything about me.” He then takes me by the hand and pulls me to stand in front of the mirror, and leaning to my ear once more as I watch him in the mirror, he speaks gently. “Lean forward and put your palms on the mirror.”
