 Promotion and Vampires Suck 

Energy. They both suck energy. From introverts anyway. I’ve never actually been sucked by a vampire, but if I had, I imagine it would be draining.

Because I have no firsthand experience with vampire suckage, I will stick to the topic of promotion suckage.

As an introvert, you’d think the digital age would make it a snap for me to promote myself as an author.

Wrong.

I should probably first explain what exactly an introvert is. It’s not being shy, even though that’s how I used to describe myself. The difference between shyness and introversion, at least as I understand it (I have a blog devoted to this topic, if you’re interested http://shywriters.blogspot.com), is that shy people are afraid of socializing and introverts would just prefer not to do it. By that definition, I’m not shy. Just introverted. Personally, one on one is fine, but put me in a crowded room and I can only hang around so long before I need to be by myself again to recharge.

If I was “just” shy, promo in the digital age would be a piece of cake, because I don’t have to see and interact with people face to face. But I’m not shy. I’m introverted. And in social media, you’re around lots of people, hundreds of people, every time you open Twitter or Facebook (or whichever app you choose). And remember, introverts find too much socializing an energy suck. Just like – come on, say it with me -- a vampire.

I can only take so much Twitter (like 5 minutes at a time) before I need to shut it down. On Facebook, I will scroll down my Home page one or two times, but much more than that and I feel like I’ve just spent time in a crowded room. Even if I really like everyone in that room, it’s still exhausting.

Hmm. If I didn’t know me, I’d think I was rather odd.

I’m sure not all introverts feel the same way about social media. I’m just referring to myself here.

As far as actual promo goes, I don’t know if it’s the introvert in me or my late grandma’s voice in my ear telling me “nice young ladies don’t talk about themselves,” but I’d much rather talk about someone else’s books or accomplishments.
