I have broken one of my own rules.
When I got into this writing game, I made a decision NOT to write about vampires. Yes, I do have some poetry written from a vampire’s point of view, but a couple lines about how tasty humans look can’t be considered serious writing, can it? That was just for fun. I chose not to write about vampires for one simple reason.
I LOVE VAMPIRES!
Not kidding here. I truly love them, as in I wish they were real and maybe hope that someday I will stumble upon one in its lair just waiting for me. I have yet to read a book or watch a TV show/movie about vampires where I didn’t fall hopelessly in love with the fangers. From Brad Pitt in Interview with a Vampire, to Edward and all the Cullens in the Twilight series, to Mick St. John in Moonlight, to Jean-Claude in Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series, to Damon Salvatore in Vampire Diaries…oh, heavenly darkness, I love them all.
My decision not to write about them comes from the fact that vampires have an air of mystery. Something about writing a story about them, where I’m the creator of the rules that bind them, where they do what I wish them to do, where their story is my story, takes some of that mystery away. Part of my enjoyment of vamps comes from not knowing how things will turn out for them in something I’m reading or watching. I just don’t want to be a vampire’s puppetmaster.
That is until I saw All Romance Ebooks’ call for entries to its “Just One Bite” contest. All finalists get to have their stories on All Romance Ebooks’ website as free reads and readers can vote in several rounds for their favorites. I saw this call, drummed my fingers on my keyboard, and wondered if I had it in me to break my own rule and play around with some vampire characters.
Turns out…I did and I ended up being one of the contest’s finalists. My story, “Every Last Bite,” is up on their contest page for you to read for FREE right now. I’ve already made it to Round 2 and would very much appreciate your vote. You do have to set up an account with All Romance Ebooks, which is really easy.
I’m hoping you will enjoy my story of what happens when a vampire maker and her progeny fall in love, and you will vote for me. It’d be nice to know that in breaking my own rule in writing about vampires, I at least broke it well.
Here’s the blurb for “Every Last Bite.”
Tessa regrets her actions and the secrets she’s been keeping from Doren, the only man she’s ever really wanted.
Doren wants to love Tessa forever, but she keeps pushing him away.
Will their love be enough to break the rules that bind Tessa? If they have forever to live, do they have forever to love?
Excerpt:
I leaned forward and pressed my lips to Doren’s. A rumble vibrated in his throat as he kissed me back. His arms supported his weight until I encircled him with my own and pulled him down on top of me. He pushed the strap of my tank top aside and trailed hot kisses along my flesh. His movements were slow and gentle at first, but gained a certain passionate wildness within moments. He was hungry, starving, and his lips were skilled.
His tongue swirled over my neck as his arms tightened around my waist. He sniffed along the curve of my chin, and I knew he smelled it.
Blood. But not mine.

Hi Chris, thanks so much for being here today. Help yourself to the buffet and open bar. Loved the Moonlight series. That Mick was definitely a hottie.
I'm adding Every Last Bite to my TBR pile and I voted for you. Good Luck!
Thanks, W. Lynn! I was so sad when Moonlight ended. I LOVED that show. Mick was so...so...ohhhh...
