Manic Monday

You may think I'm weird and that's okay. I don't like being normal, but I wish for Mondays. I learn for them like some wish for Fridays or the Weekend.

Weekends for me are incredibly busy Saturdays are for running errands and Sundays are for church. And the other days of the week I'm at home writing. I'm a homebody, by nature but I do like to get out every now and then. No I do not drive and not because I can't. I'm a good driver, but my eye sight isn't what it used to be.

It may surprise some to know I'm legally blind and have been since I was 18. I have what's called retinitis pigmentosa or RP for short. It's an inherited eye condition which has no known cure. My condition is monitored by one of the top specialists in his field. I'm developing a cataract in my right eye and while my doctor has prescribed a regiment of vitamins to take on a daily basis, I have a hard time remembering to take them.

You're probably wondering if I can see. Yes. I'm nearsighted with astigmatism, but it's the peripheral vision that's jacked up. My field is four degrees in one eye and 2 degrees in the other. Want to know what that means? Hold a paper towel tube or toilet paper tube to your eye and that's pretty good duplicate of what I see or and for added flare you can take a cloth, cut holes in it and place it over your eyes. Yeah, that's fun too.

I've learned to compensate. My eyes are constantly moving, I touch things a lot. I'm really big on textures and smells. So everything from the clothes I wear to the detergent I buy is geared towards me. And this often travels into what I write.
