Meet Josephine Burton-Smitten

Introducing: Josephine "Jo" Button
Book: Smitten by Silke Juppenlatz
Smitten by Silke Juppenlatz
What makes you happy now?
Ash. Ash is the source of my happiness. He tries so hard to make me smile and laugh, coming up with all sorts of stunts and silly things. I love the way he treats animals, makes them whole. Just like he made me whole. Having friends who don't judge me. That also makes me happy, because I never had it before.

What is your greatest fear?
That everything goes back to the way it was. I’m afraid Ash is just a wonderful dream I’m having. It’s hard to deal with people when they see only what they want to see, believe only what they want to believe. I’m still terrified it’s all a fluke.

What would you change about yourself if you could?
Because of all the negativity aimed at me for so many years, I’m very shy with people. I often hide behind Ash and while he understands, I think he’d like me to be a little more trusting, a little less reserved toward people in town. But it comes back to the worry that it will all change again. *she smiles a little* I’m really just a big scaredy-cat, but I’m working on that.

What’s your favorite color?
Brown. *she grins* It used to be yellow, but then I looked into Ash’s eyes and now it’s brown.
What type of vehicle do you drive?
I used to have a Honda Camry. It was really old and decrepit, but it got me from A to B. Most of the time. Ash scrapped it after it died in his parking lot, and I’m driving his F150 at the moment. Nice truck, even if it does smell a little of dogs and cats. I guess that’s what I get for being in love with a veterinarian.
Describe yourself to me.
I’m five foot eight and blond, with blue eyes.
How would the hero describe you?
He’d probably tell you I’m tall, elegant, slender, but with an hourglass figure, have long blond hair, blue eyes and the face of an angel. *she sighs* He is the angel, but honestly, sometimes I want to shove a sock in his mouth when he describes me to someone.
You know how they say love is blind, right? Well…He’s biased. I’d take anything he says with a grain of salt. He keeps telling me I’m beautiful, and encourages me to wear pretty clothes, when I want to hang out in a wooly jumper, leggings and slouch socks. I’d rather not look sexy, as it’s been the bane of my life. It’s embarrassing and uncomfortable when everyone stares at you, wondering what you might be like…in certain situations.
What really moves you, or touches you to the soul?
Kindness. From anyone, toward anyone. A kind word goes a long way, you know? Doing something selfless -- and Ash is a prime example for that -- even when you don’t like the person. That touches me.
Seeing the way he deals with the animals at his clinic is remarkable, but sometimes a pet is beyond help. The way he makes it easy for the animal, and how he deals with the owner…that moves me. He makes it less painful, and is very gentle when he has to give bad news. It’s because he is grieving too, but he’d never show it.
And *her voice lowers* that big lug dresses up as Santa and hands out presents to needy kids. He’d never admit it, but he does. Besides, he loves all the human traditions. If he has an excuse to dress up -- Halloween or Christmas -- he’s all for it. That’s his part of the fun. Making kids smile? Oh yeah, he’s very, very good at that.
If you were granted three wishes, what would you ask for?
My first one is very selfish. I want Ash to never stop loving me. My second one would be that he is always happy and content, even if it meant I’d have to let him go. My third one would be that Five Oaks and it’s people are always healthy, happy and never at odds with each other.
What three things would you take to a Desert Island?
Ash, my sewing machine, and his life size model of Yoda. Where one goes, the other follows. Can’t have the man anywhere without his Yoda, and if I didn’t bring the darn thing, he’d probably swim all the way back just to fetch him.

Silke grew up in Germany and is used to things going bump in the night -- and it wasn't always the acrophobic cat, or someone hitting their head on a low beam on the ceiling.
She writes paranormal romance, usually at night, and blames Anne Stuart to this day for all her ambitions and strange stories, after reading one of her books.
These days the only thing going bump at "oh-dark-thirty" is her -- usually when she smacks into the sofa while creeping to the kitchen for another cup of coffee.

Silke likes to hear from her readers.

An Interview with Cole Harmon

What makes you happy now?
Maddy makes me happy…oh you mean in life in general? Well..I own a ski lodge and just opened up a new one in the town of Tall Oaks. It’s gorgeous here. I love my hometown—beautiful views, snow everywhere, and the people are great. It’s taken Maddy a long time to come back to me, but I think we have a great life together now. I’m just happy all around!
What is your greatest fear?
* frowns * These questions are extremely personal! Let’s see…my fear is if anything ever happened to my family. My wife and my businesses are my EVERYTHING. Of course Maddy comes first. I’m a die-hard loving husband (Or at least that’s what I tell myself.) My wife doesn’t like me working so much but she’s a workaholic herself with her designing business. I worry one day that my happiness gets ripped from me because life just seems so surreal right now…perfect.
What would you change about yourself if you could?
Change? Why would I want to change anything? I’m as perfect as they come! Okay, kidding aside. Well, I used to be cynic about the moving the city, having a life away from Tall Oaks. I guess my outlook on life was similar to my dad, who is always grumpy. But Maddy’s return has changed all that. I love everything about life. If she wanted to move back to the city, I would go with her without a doubt. I used to focus only on work, and I think that was one of my issues. My drive to succeed and make our town into an attraction had taken over my whole being…and that had cost me Maddy. But no more! I’ve never letting the woman go!
What’s your favorite color?
Tough question. Probably blue. Would any color my wife wears count?

What type of vehicle do you drive?
I drive a large black GMC truck. It’s dangerous around here to be in anything smaller. The snow can get ridiculous depending on the time of the year, but he skiers love it out here. Maddy has been caught in an avalanche before. They’re pretty common around here.

Describe yourself to me.
Well, physically (since you can’t see me) I’m tall dark and handsome. (Leaves a lot to the imagination, huh?) Okay, really I’m pretty short. I wish I was taller, but I am the perfect height for Maddy. I enjoy skiing, anything outdoors, and just running my business. I have a little brother, who is the town sheriff, and of course he gets on my nerves at times. But really I’m a boring old guy…content, not boring.

How would the hero/ine describe you?
*sigh * This would depend on the mood Maddy is in. When she loves me, she thinks I’m the most wonderful guy in the world. I’d be sweet, caring, and just perfect to her. When she hates me, she thinks I’m a jerk, a tool…I forgot what other names she’s called me. I do frustrate her at times, but she never backs down when we have fights, which is one of the things I love about her. Her most recent fantasy was to make love out in the snow…we’re still working on that. Nature hates us together.
What really moves you, or touches you to the soul?
A single smile from Maddy can easily unman me, but most importantly just seeing my family and my wife happy and knowing our love holds strong. Does that sound corny of me?
If you were granted three wishes, what would you ask for?
Awww, shucks. Just three? Let’s see…
  1. A little Maddy to be running around the slopes.
  2. More business for Tall Oaks
  3. Just for Maddy and me to be together forever and always happy.
*sniff* Dammit, this interview is turning me into a sap!
What three things would you take to a Desert Island?
  1. My wife- can’t live without her.
  2. Tent – because Maddy isn’t an outdoor person
  3. Knife – to kill food with.
Thank you so much for having me here today! It’s been a joy to visit.

An Interview with Dina aka Edna Carruthers from Mid-Winter Magic

What makes you happy now?
Not killing anyone. Really, it’s such a relief to leave the assassination business behind.
But so many things make me happy now. You know, I’d been angry for so long that I’d forgotten the simple pleasures in life. I mean, I like baking, at least my alter-ego, Edna Carruthers likes baking—who would have believed it. I never baked in my entire life before I came to Five Oaks. And my pies are good!
What is your greatest fear?
That’s an easy one—that Ty will turn up, and I’ll see for real just how much he hates me.
What would you change about yourself if you could?
I’d be taller and I’d have long blond hair and no freckles.
What’s your favorite color?
Purple. I also like black but I reckon that’s because Ty always dressed in black.
What type of vehicle do you drive?
I don’t drive. I never learnt. If I have to get somewhere real quick, I’ll just hop on my broomstick. Only kidding. Though I could if I wanted to, but it would probably be a little conspicuous around Five Oaks, so I tend to walk. Five Oaks isn’t that big.
Describe yourself to me.
I’m small. I mean really small— short and I’m skinny. Actually, it always helped in the assassin business, because no one ever saw me as a threat until way too late. I still hate it though. I also have red hair—really red.

And I’m not a bad person. I’ve come to see that now, despite the whole assassin thing. I doubt I ever killed anyone who didn’t deserve to die, and I haven’t killed anyone for at least fifty years.
How would the hero describe you?
Ty? Well, obviously he’d say I was a complete bitch. I mean, I did kill his sire after all.
Anyway, back then, it was true. I was a bitch as well as being the most notorious assassin around. But I was screwed up, totally, and I only had one goal in mind. I’ve changed since then—straightened out.
What really moves you, or touches you to the soul?
Christmas. I love it.
When I was growing up, we never celebrated Christmas, and I still don’t celebrate myself—I’m a witch after all. We’re more into celebrating the winter solstice than the birth of Christ (and I still do that, but I take myself away from town to do it—the locals really wouldn’t understand the whole dancing around naked thing—only kidding again—it’s way too cold to dance naked in Five Oaks)
But I love watching the people of Five Oaks having Christmas all around me, the decorations, the food, just enjoying themselves.
If you were granted three wishes, what would you ask for?
You know, someone once offered me this very thing, and I thought about it, but in the end, the price was way too high. But here’s what I came up with if I had considered signing my soul over to the devil for the next thousand years:
  1. I wish I hadn’t listened to my Mom and not gone away that day. I wish I’d stayed around and saved them from Severino.
  2. Of course, then I would have never murdered Ty’s sire or met Ty. So my second wish is that I could have met him at a party or something, like normal people. Though really I’m a witch and he’s a vampire—what’s normal about that?
  3. And last—I’d wish he’d love me as much as I love him.
What three things would you take to a Desert Island?
Ty
And a big bunch of mistletoe
No, I don’t need three things two is enough.
